Europe’s Largest Telecommunications Company, Deutsche Telekom, Makes a Bold Move into Bitcoin
Deutsche Telekom, the largest telecommunications provider in Europe, has made waves in the cryptocurrency world with its recent announcement. At the BTC Prague conference, Dirk Röder, the head of Web3 infrastructure and solutions at T-Systems MMS, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom, revealed the company’s plans to delve into Bitcoin mining.
Röder disclosed that Deutsche Telekom has been actively involved in the cryptocurrency space since 2023, operating Bitcoin and Lightning nodes. He described their upcoming foray into Bitcoin mining as ‘digital monetary photosynthesis’. When questioned by prominent Bitcoin influencer Joe Nakamoto about T-Mobile’s involvement in mining Bitcoin, Röder confirmed their intentions.
Deutsche Telekom’s interest in cryptocurrencies goes beyond Bitcoin, as they also engage with various blockchain networks such as Polkadot, Flow, and Celo. In 2022, the company announced its support for Ethereum by running validator nodes and collaborating with StakeWise’s liquid staking protocol, as well as participating in governance DAO.
Furthermore, Deutsche Telekom has formed partnerships with several blockchain companies, including operating verification nodes for Polygon and supporting Q and Chainlink blockchain networks. Their expansion into the world of cryptocurrencies showcases their commitment to innovation and embracing new technologies.
