President Donald Trump has privately informed his inner circle that Elon Musk will soon step back from his prominent role as a managing partner and political figure in the administration, according to sources close to the White House, as first reported by Politico.
The anticipated transition marks a significant shift in their relationship, which had previously positioned Musk as a key figure in the Trump administration’s efforts to streamline government operations.
Despite Musk’s departure from his active role, Trump remains pleased with his contributions, particularly through his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative. Three administration officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that Trump and Musk agreed that the billionaire entrepreneur would soon focus on their businesses in a more supportive and advisory role.

Musk’s planned withdrawal comes amid growing frustration among Trump’s inner circle and outside allies over his unpredictable nature. Many see him as a political liability, especially after Tuesday’s Wisconsin Supreme Court elections, in which Musk lost by 10 points to a conservative candidate he openly supports. Democrats used Musk’s financial involvement in the race — reportedly around $20 million — to frame the election results as a referendum on Musk’s controversial influence.
One senior administration official suggested Musk would retain an informal advisory position and could continue to appear in the White House, while another insider warned that those who expected Musk to disappear entirely from Trump’s political orbit were “kidding themselves.”
Musk’s transition comes as his special government employee status is expected to expire in late May or early June, temporarily exempting him from some ethics and conflict of interest rules and giving him significant influence within the administration.
