Title: Pro-Bitcoin Presidential Candidate Vows to Pardon Silk Road Founder if Elected
In a bold move during his campaign, US presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has pledged to pardon Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the infamous Silk Road e-commerce platform, if he is elected to office. Ulbricht was involved in Bitcoin trading on Silk Road, and after the platform’s collapse, a significant amount of BTC ended up in the hands of the US government.
Kennedy took to the social media platform X to make this announcement, arguing that the two life sentences Ulbricht received were excessively severe. “Ross Ulbricht has been imprisoned for far too long. If I become president, I will grant him a pardon,” Kennedy stated. The presidential candidate also urged his followers to sign a petition advocating for Ulbricht’s release.
Interestingly, Kennedy’s stance aligns with that of former President Donald Trump, who is also running for the 2024 presidency. During the Libertarian National Convention in Washington, D.C. in May, Trump vowed to commute Ulbricht’s sentence on his first day back in office if re-elected.
Both Kennedy and Trump have positioned themselves as pro-cryptocurrency candidates, aiming to safeguard Bitcoin from what they perceive as President Joe Biden’s anti-crypto policies. Kennedy, in particular, views Bitcoin as a hedge against inflation and a vital tool for ensuring transaction freedom.
This support for Ulbricht’s release and the pro-crypto stance of these candidates sharply contrasts with the current administration’s approach. Both Kennedy and Trump have expressed their opposition to the development of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs).
Ulbricht, who has already spent 11 years in prison, responded with gratitude to Trump’s earlier promise and expressed hope for a “second chance” due to the efforts of his supporters.
As the 2024 presidential race intensifies, the fate of Ross Ulbricht and the future of cryptocurrency policy in the United States remain crucial subjects that could significantly influence voter decisions.
